Huckabee energy policies are largely his environment policies. As a Christian, Huckabee thinks we have a duty to preserve the environment. Not only as a Republican, but as a Christian it's important to me to say to my fellow believers, 'Look, if anybody ought to be leading on this issue, it ought to be us.' We can't justify destroying a planet that doesn't belong to us, and if we believe that God did create this world for our pleasure and wants us to enjoy it, then all the more reason that we should take care of it. Grist.org notes a few aspects of Huckabee's record as governor. As Arkansas governor, supported the National Governors Association's 2006 policy position on climate change, which recommends ongoing climate research, development of emissions-reducing technology, and other voluntary measures. In 2001, signed into law the Arkansas Renewable Energy Development Act, which requires utilities to offer net metering to both commercial and residential customers. While the bill is principally aimed at energy created from renewable sources, the legislation leaves open the possibility for the utilities commission to allow non-renewable sources as part of the program. Huckabee essentially supports the notion a national effort to find alternative energy source. All the candidates seem to want to do this. The idea is to stop global warming and to stop funding terrorism. Personally, I think a national program to find alternative energy sources would be a huge boondoggle. Why does anybody believe our government can organize and fund such a program without huge waste, fraud, and abuse? If we don't want people to use fossil fuels, why don't we just tax the use of fossil fuels? Let private enterprise do what private enterprise does best. If we tax the pollutants that result from the use of fossil fuels, consumers will pay a price that comes closer to the true cost of using fossil fuels. That will provide an incentive for entrepreneurs to invent and sell energy alternatives that reduce the affects of pollution.
