Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. A military force, at the command of Congress, can execute no laws, but such as the people perceive to be just and constitutional; for they will possess the power, and jealousy will instantly inspire the inclination, to resist the execution of a law which appears to them unjust and oppressive. ---Noah Webster, An Examination of the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution (Philadelphia 1787). And that is what it is all about When our government is no longer controlled by the people - all hell can break lose and liberty and freedom will be in jeopardy. It starts with disarming the people. Then the government can institute complete control over them. And we must always remember that our "militias" - or standing armies - are made up of the people. And when someone commits a crime - they should be punished appropriately. It's not about the gun - it's about the crime. Too many times criminals are let out of jail for good behavior for such heinous crimes as murder. If the punishment were to fit the crime - there would be no need for discussions about gun control or whether or not our constitution guarantees our right to bare arms. Let's not control the ownership of guns. Let's control the punishment of criminals who use guns in a manner that our founding fathers would object to.
