Get the facts on wolves

I am writing today in response to Rep. Josh Heintzeman's letter about wolves by Camp Ripley. I am bothered by Representative Heintzeman's statement about parts of Minnesota becoming a "dead zone." That is neither scientific nor logical. We know there is a positive correlation between wolf density and deer density. A few wolves are in an area and your first thought is overpopulation? Wolves have to eat and they eat deer. His sort of blustery opinion, not based on science, is why wolves should not be in the hands of Minnesota state management. Until these common misconceptions about how predator-prey relationships work are cleared up, politicians (instead of scientists) shouldn't be anywhere near a wolf management plan. Ethical hunters love having wolves perform their role in making deer numbers less dense and stronger. This dumbing down of wildlife management to favor "bagging a buck" over legitimate science is why wolves should remain protected. Until everyone is willing to get the scientific facts before putting out a nonsense opinion piece on "dead zones," wolves should remain out of the hands of the political science lobby, otherwise known as the Minnesota DNR.
