With respect to what he would do as president, Huckabee position on education is somewhat vague. Ironically, Huckabee promises to clarify the differences between the roles of the Federal and state government. He implies that state government has the predominant responsibility, but that the Federal government has a role in providing a national effort to set high standards. Here is what he said in an interview. I think if there's a role it is to encourage, it's to recognize the value and importance. Ronald Reagan tried to get rid of the Department of Education, found that it was virtually impossible to do it. So, if we are going to have one, let's make sure it serves a role that is consistent with the Constitution, which is to become a clearinghouse of best practices that are being employed by the states and by local school districts, rather than becoming a center of mandating educational initiatives pushed back down to the states. Huckabee does make clear his support for the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. The problem with the NCLB Act is that when the Federal Government ties funding to the enforcement of standards it inevitably begins to usurp state rights and nationalize our education system. Huckabee does not provide clear support school choice. Huckabee supports charter schools and public school choice. As residents of Prince William have found, charter schools can be so regulated that such schools are next to impossible to establish. Public school choice is oxymoronic. Huckabee has spoken in support of 'tax credits for a family whose decision is to put their children in an alternative environment'. However, there is a problem with tax credits. Tax credits could persuade middle class parents to abandon the public school system to the children of the poor. That perhaps explains why Huckabee does not support such tax credits on his website. Huckabee's record is described in some detail here. Overall, during his tenure as governor, he appears to have had some success doing two things. â—¾At the direction of the Arkansas Supreme Court, he led an effort to equalize school funding across the state. â—¾Raising student test scores. Huckabee has the endorsement of the New Hampshire chapter of the National Education Association.
