As if the resounding message from last month's midterm elections was not enough, another powerful Democrat senator, Mary Landrieu (D-LA), was defeated in a landslide on Saturday. It doesn't take a prophet to read the tea leaves of this election cycle. Americans want the current policies of the Obama administration – those that place their interests at the back of the line – to stop. According to polls conducted prior to the Louisiana runoff, by a wide margin, the top priority of voters in the Bayou State is stopping Obama's amnesty. By a 2-1 margin, voters want to encourage illegal immigrants to return home by cutting off access to jobs and welfare. 77% of respondents said jobs should go to workers already in the country – instead of bringing in new immigrants to fill those jobs. They want an agenda that puts Americans first. So have Republicans heard the message? Well, they have allowed these very defeated senators to write a year-long budget that puts Americans last and prioritizes foreign interests. Politico's David Rogers has the long details of the emerging budget deal, but the heart and soul of this budget is best portrayed in the following paragraph: Almost all the big initiatives begin at the water's edge: containing Ebola in West Africa, fighting the Islamic State (ISIL) in the Mideast, shoring up Europe against Vladimir Putin's Russia, helping Central America counter the violence and poverty that sent thousands of children across the Rio Grande into Texas last spring. Not only do Republicans plan to fund all of the agencies Obama is using to import illegal immigrants, they are throwing even more money at Central American countries that refuse to respect our sovereignty. Everything begins at the water's edge. What about focusing on Americans first? Before we throw more money at Central America, why not defund amnesty so we can protect Americans from the fiscal burden? Before we rebuild western Africa, why not protect America first from those who travel here from countries infected with Ebola? Before we send more money to the terror-saturated Syrian rebels and the inept Iraqi army, why not protect America first by clamping down on visas from countries that represent a security risk? Why not punish those ISIS fighters who live in America and try them for treason? What's even more offensive is that in addition eschewing any effort to defund Obama's illegal amnesty, this bill will fund every other government department until next October, granting Obama full reign over his kingdom for 10 months. He will now have the ability to use the EPA, Labor Department, HHS, and IRS to remake America in other ways –all without any fear of reprisal from the congressional purse strings. Why are Republicans allowing the defeated Democrats to help craft the budget when they can just wait another month or two and completely steamroll the people who were just defeated? Viewed in totality, this budget places the short-term interests of the D.C. oligarchy and those of foreign entities over the interests of every day Americans. And now Americans are demanding relief from Obama's pernicious policies, yet Republicans view it as their best interest in avoiding conflict at all costs. This year, voters turned to Republicans to serve as a voice for the people. Sadly, Republicans are showing from day one that they would rather enable and empower the defeated party than use their mandate to reverse course. Republicans have diminished their mandate to mere symbolic opposition. If they continue on this selfish trajectory, voters might ‘symbolically' vote them out of office next time while looking elsewhere to actually advance the agenda of Americans first.
